SI: Digital Innovations for Enhancing Healthcare Delivery and System Performance

Special Issue on Digital Innovations for Enhancing Healthcare Delivery and System Performance, International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

About this Special Issue

Digital transformation is reshaping healthcare delivery by enabling continuous, data-driven, personalized, and more efficient services across prevention, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and public health management. Innovations such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, mobile and wearable technologies, telemedicine, interoperable electronic health records, digital therapeutics, privacy-preserving analytics, clinical decision support systems, and digital health platforms create new opportunities to improve access, quality, safety, equity, and system performance. At the same time, their adoption raises methodological, organizational, ethical, legal, usability, cybersecurity, and evaluation challenges that must be addressed to ensure trustworthy and sustainable integration into routine care. This Special Issue welcomes original research, systematic reviews, implementation studies, case studies, and methodological contributions examining how digital innovations enhance healthcare delivery, patient and provider experience, health outcomes, and the performance, resilience, and sustainability of health systems. Interdisciplinary submissions that connect technological development with clinical, public-health, managerial, and policy perspectives are particularly encouraged. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning for clinical and public-health decision support
  • Telemedicine, mHealth, digital therapeutics, and remote-care models
  • Wearable sensors, Internet of Medical Things, remote monitoring, and digital biomarkers
  • Electronic health records, interoperability, health-data infrastructures, and European Health Data Space-related applications
  • Privacy-preserving analytics, cybersecurity, ethical AI, trustworthy data governance, and regulatory compliance
  • Implementation science, evaluation frameworks, usability, acceptance, and digital health literacy
  • Health-system performance, workflow optimization, patient safety, quality improvement, and resilience
  • Digital innovations for health equity, vulnerable populations, maternal, child, and adolescent health
  • Real-world data, learning health systems, predictive analytics, and population-health management
  • Human-centred design and co-creation of digital health services with patients, clinicians, and health-system stakeholders
  • Ethical issues raised by autonomous robotic or digital health services

The submission deadline for this Special Issue is 31 May 2027.
